HELEN EWING WILLIS TINKLER (nee THOMSON) Helen Tinkler died peacefully on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 after a long struggle with Alzheimer disease. She was predeceased by her husband Jeff, and brothers, Bill and Jim. Helen is survived by her daughter Val Thomson (Al Bray), son John Tinkler (John Phelps), granddaughters Nancy and Esme and their father Bill Harrar. Also surviving are sister-in-law Val Tulloch and family and brother-in-law Roy Tinkler and family. In addition, there are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in England, Scotland and Australia. Helen was born in Glasgow, Scotland on March 28, 1923. In her youth, Helen was noted for her lovely singing voice. She sang in the choir of Saint Mary's Episcopal Cathedral in Glasgow and once sang for the conductor, Sir John Barbarolli at a local eisteddfod. Helen served as a member of the WAACS in London during the Second World War. She and her family immigrated to Canada in 1967. Helen volunteered tirelessly for the Canadian Red Cross and was recognized for her long service by the Minister of Health and Welfare, Perrin Beatty. She was a member of the I.O.D.E. and the University of Manitoba Engineers' Wives. For many years, Helen was an active supporting member of the Winnipeg Gliding Club, accompanying Jeff every weekend to make a second home at the flying field. Ever loving, hardworking and loyal, Helen will be missed by her friends and family. Thanks go out to visitors, Gerry and Joanne. Special thanks to the dedicated staff at the Lions' Manor Personal Care Home for their exceptional kindness which always extended to Helen's family. In accordance with Helen's wishes, her body has been contributed to the University of Manitoba for the advancement of medicine through anatomical study. There will be no funeral, however a come and go tea in her memory will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2007, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 1510 McCreary Road, Winnipeg. All friends welcome. If friends wish, they may make a donation to the Alzheimers Society of Winnipeg, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, R3C 4G2, or the Jeffrey Tinkler Memorial Foundation Scholarship at Private Funding, Room 179, Continuing Education Complex, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, R3T 2N2.
