LAURENCE WILLIAM MACKLIN On December 30, 2006, Laurence William Macklin passed on at the Selkirk General Hospital following a brief illness. Laurence was predeceased by wife Jane Frances; infant son Lorne Fillmore; and his parents May and Wilbert Macklin. He is survived by his son Jim; his nephew Calvin (Jane) Brown, and their daughters, Sarah, Laura and Erin, with whom he lived; his sisters, Marjorie (Wilton) Brown and Edith (Roy) Minish; brothers, Lloyd (Ena) and Jim (Lynne); and sister-in-law Esther Pearson, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. Laurence was born in Ethelbert, Manitoba, but grew up in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba. His mother passed on when Laurence was 11 and being the oldest, his siblings remember Laurence continuing the care for them, even to the point of knitting them winter scarves. In 1943, he voluntarily joined the R.C.A.F. and was later commissioned as a pilot instructor, training pilots in Claresholm, Alberta for service overseas. Following the war, he returned to Gilbert Plains, where he met his wife-to-be, Jane Fillmore, who had accepted a teaching position there. They married in 1949 and after a time of working for a bank, Laurence decided to accept his father-in-law's offer to take over the management of the Fillmore family farm, east of Clandeboye. Laurence spent the next 50 years in management, and eventual ownership, of the farm and for a number of years was also employed teaching CanFarm accounting principles to other farmers. Laurence remained living on his farm until his passing, spending much of his time, enjoying his private park', as he called the farm yard, with his special-needs son, Jim. Laurence and Jane were involved for many years as dedicated volunteers for the Selkirk Association for Community Living. He was a Life Member of the Association. Both were also actively involved for many years in providing services to the Clandeboye community. Special thanks to Home Care and Bonnie Hunnie, from Family Services, for their assistance. A memorial service will be held at Clandeboye United Church on Friday, January 5, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Judy Limpright officiating. Interment service to follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dennis Brown, Parker Fillmore, Brian Minish, Lorne Pearson, Michael Pearson and Ron Unruh. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those so wishing, may make a donation in Laurence's memory to the Association for Community Living, 306 - A Jemima St., Selkirk, MB R1A 1X1 or to a charity of their choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
