DAVID MUNCE RODGERS June 26, 1920 - December 30, 2006 After a brief but courageous fight with cancer, David passed away at the Grace Hospice. David was predeceased by his parents, James and Annie; brother Bill (Esther) and sister Norah (Gary Duguid). Left with their fondest memories is his wife June (McBain); sons, Jim (Joanne), and Dave (Denise); sister Elizabeth (Fred Graves); grandchildren, Brad (Shaila), Greg (Amy), Scott (Sue), and Dave Jr; great-grandchildren, David and Kaitlyn; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. David was born and raised in Winnipeg. After graduating from Norwood Collegiate he joined The Bank Of Commerce, Norwood Branch. To the end David was a proud member of the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. During the Second World War, he attained the rank of Major, and was awarded, The Distinguished Service Order for gallantry and Distinguished Conduct during The Battle At Calcar, Germany, February 25/26, 1945. At wars end, he returned home to continue his banking career, which took him and his growing family to Fort Frances and Moose Jaw before his final postings in Winnipeg where he and June were active with the All Saints Kinsmen and Kinettes. David undertook new opportunities with the Province of Manitoba, Department Of Industry and Commerce and later a similar position with the Ontario Government where he and June wound up his career in New York, N.Y. Retiring to Toronto, they enjoyed their twilight years together, wintering at their home in Orange Acres, Sarasota, Florida. In the fall of 1997, David and June returned to Winnipeg to be closer to family and lifelong friends. The family would like to acknowledge the doctors and staff at CancerCare, Grace Hospital and Health Sciences Centre, The Palliative Home Care and Visiting Nurses Programs, and the staff at Grace Hospice for all of their wonderful care and comfort given during David's final journey. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will host a celebration of his life on Friday, January 5, at 1:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to Grace Hospice, 260 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3R5 in memory of David. I was that which others did not want to be. I went where others feared to go, And did what others failed to do. I asked nothing from those who gave nothing, And reluctantly accepted the thought of Eternal loneliness should I fail. I have seen the face of terror, Felt the stinging cold of fear, And enjoyed the sweet taste of a moment's love. But most of all, I have lived times others would say were best forgotten. At least someday, I will be able to say that I was proud of what I was...A Soldier. Source unknown. Arrangements entrusted to: Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 885-9715
