Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRICHARD WINTLE MALLEN July 11, 1930 - December 28, 2006 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Mallen at home on December 28, 2006 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Rich leaves to mourn his beloved wife Val; their children, Corinne (Jim) Adams, Trent, Leslie (Paul) Robinson and Linda; along with five grandchildren, Aaron, Marshall, Jenna, Alyssa and Tessa who will all lovingly remember him as a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He is also survived by his sister Lorraine and brother Vince. Richard was born in Winnipeg on July 11, 1930. In his early years, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served his country as a navigator, and was very proud to be on the first aircraft of the United Nations emergency force. In 1960, he joined Manitoba Telephone Systems and was employed there until he decided to try out early retirement. For the next 20 years, Rich and Val enjoyed life as snowbirds, heading south to Fort Myers for the winter months. During the summer he spent many enjoyable hours at West Hawk Lake, puttering in the yard and inevitably designing, building and supervising various cottage renovation projects. After retirement, Rich decided they would take up golfing, and they both spent many hours on the links with their friends in Florida. But most of all, our Dad will be remembered for his sense of humour and his wonderful story-telling, especially while holding court in the sauna at the lake. Many thanks to the palliative care angels of the South Eastman Region for all their care and support. Cremation has taken place. To celebrate Rich's life, an open house for family and friends will be held on Saturday, January 6, at 50 Henry Dormer Drive in Island Lakes from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. At Richard's request, flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made in his memory to the Ste. Anne Hospital Fund, 52 St. Gerard Street, Ste. Anne, MB R5H 1C4. Rich/Dad/Grandpa, thanks for being you... we love you and you will always be with us.
