Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE KLASSEN Gerhard (George) Klassen passed away suddenly on January 1, 2007 at Donwood Manor in Winnipeg, Manitoba. George was born on November 18, 1915 in Podgornaya, Russia and immigrated to Canada in 1924. He spent most of his life in the Manitou area. His wife Elizabeth (Elsie) passed away December 26, 2006, six days before George. He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, and three brothers. He is survived by three sons: Albert (Norma), George (Eileen), and Edwin (Shelley); two daughters: Lynda and Elvira (Howard); twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers: David (Kathleen) and John (Mary) and a large extended family. George was active throughout his life. Together with his wife Elsie, George farmed in the Manitou area for 61 years. He was committed to his community, to MCC, and to people in need. He volunteered for the Red Cross and was Coordinator of the Canadian Bible Society until his retirement. The last three years were spent in Winkler where he developed new relationships and enjoyed his involvement in local activities. Due to failing health, George and Elsie spent their last month at Donwood Manor in Winnipeg. George had a strong faith in God and in the church community. He was active in the Mennonite Brethren church as a deacon, Bible Study leader, choir member, and friend. He was a voice of reason in practical and financial matters. George had a strong commitment to his wife and to his family. Their desire was to pass away together and they were both blessed with the fruition of this desire. Both George and Elsie retained their cognitive abilities, their sense of humour, and their enjoyment of the many people that visited them in the last years, and particularly in the last month. Funeral services will be held at the North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church, 1315 Gateway Road, Winnipeg, MB on Saturday, January 6, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. with viewing prior to the service. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the Manitou Cemetery. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to physician Dr. Basson, to the home care staff in Winkler and to the staff at Donwood Manor for their compassionate care of George and Elsie, as well as to their family. If friends so desire, donations can be made to Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9 or to Canadian Red Cross Manitoba Office, P.O.
