LORNE JAMES CHRISTIE November 16, 1917 - December 31, 2006 It is with deep sadness that we the family of Lorne James Christie announce his passing at the age of 89 years. Following a brave struggle with C.O.P.D., Lorne succumbed to his illness. He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife Freda, son Jim (Louise), grandchildren, Jamie and Jason, step-children, David (Jennifer), Darryl (Stella), Gloria, Douglas and Doug, step-grandchildren, Jeff, Alison, Harmony and Daniel, sisters-in-law, Gladys Raynbird, Dorothy Opitz and Sylvia Gyles, brothers-in-law, Jerry Sveinson and Paul Sveinson and many nieces and nephews. Lorne was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Ethel (Mickey), daughter Lynn and sisters Eva and Elva. Dad was born November 16, 1917 in Winnipeg. He entered the Navy during the war and worked as a ship's carpenter. On February 18, 1939 he married his childhood sweetheart Ethel (Mickey) Papineau and together they had two children Lynn and James. Upon leaving the navy, he worked for Brown and Rutherford as a carpenter. When he saw an opportunity to open his business, he and mom opened a restaurant. The restaurant was an old jailhouse which Dad quickly converted into living quarters and restaurant combined. After the property was sold Dad built a house in Garden City where he lived for 44 years. He worked for Williams Restaurant Equipment until his retirement in 1981. One of Dad's greatest prides besides his grandchildren, was the cottage that he and mom built on Falcon Lake in 1952. He always had a story to tell of those earlier years. We spent many nights in the kitchen playing canasta by the woodstove and creating many wonderful memories with a glass of rye in hand. After his retirement he and Mom enjoyed many summers at the lake with their grandchildren, Jamie and Jason. The sounds of Gramps let's go for a walk up the mountain and pick blueberries for breakfast will always be with me. He and mom were always there for us to lend a hand, baby-sit, have a game of canasta, remodel a house or two, and enjoy quality family time together. When Mom died, a light went out for Dad. He was fortunate to meet Freda and they shared that last 12 years together. Freda's devotion to our dad and grandfather was always appreciated. Dad would always say how lucky he was to have found the two best women in the world to love and to have loved him in return. Now with Dad's passing a light has gone out in our lives but we will always remember his humour, generosity and kindness. In keeping with Dad's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family interment will be held. Family and close friends will gather at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Avenue (Aubrey Street entrance) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 6 to celebrate Lorne's life, with Pastor Bill Ehlers of Bethesda Church officiating. The family wishes to express their sincere thankfulness for the wonderful care given to Lorne by the staff at Riverview Palliative Care Unit. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Riverview Palliative Care Unit, 1 Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
