EVERT CHARLES JOHNSON
Date of Passing: Jan 03, 2007
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEVERT CHARLES JOHNSON Peacefully on January 3, 2007 Evert passed away at Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 93. Evert was predeceased by his parents Emil and Ingrid; brothers Don, Sigurd, Ture, Ernest; sisters, Emily, Ina. He is survived by a sister Alice (Bissett) and brother Sid Johnson. In addition to many relatives and friends he will be lovingly remembered by his wife Mildred (Mel); daughter Elaine Ogilvie (Robert); son Don (Jacqueline); grandchildren, James Ogilvie (Virliza), Cameron (Megan), Leesa, Michelle, and Kellsey Dawn Johnson. Every was born in Winnipeg later moving with family to Chatfield, Manitoba. Here he developed lifelong friendships which led him to being a founding member of the Chatfield Old-timers Club. After leaving Chatfield he went to work as a steel sharpener in the mines around Red Lake. He often spoke of the hard work but the good times. Most of his life's work was as a journeyman painter and decorator employed with Carlson Decorating. This employment included living in Edmonton and later returning to Winnipeg. He took pride in his contribution as foreman of the painting crew when the Winnipeg Inn, todays Fairmont, was being built, but his greater joy was to see the happy face of a friend or relative when he painted a car or helped decorate a room. After serving his country as a member of the Canadian Armoured Corps he became a member of the St. Vital Legion. Over the years at the legion he enjoyed many friends and could never say no to a challenge for a pool game. Far from his plans of daily routine, little did he know that one day he was going to be a community club figure and coach. He helped to shape the lives of many young people in his coaching days and later became a supportive fan. Evert was a person who enjoyed his time being around home or helping out a friend or relative with a little job . The challenge of a game of checkers or a card game was always possible. He always had a love for reading and TV was his friend. In January of 2006 Evert left the residence he called home for over 50 years. Despite the courageous efforts of his wife Mel, physical challenges and medical conditions prompted a move to Deer Lodge Centre. Here he became one of the boys according to staff. While here, his interests in TV declined only to redirect his energies to an incredible appetite for reading. He always enjoyed a visit but that had to be after he had read the paper. The family thanks the staff of T7 at Deer Lodge for their attention and kindness over the year, together with the caring and compassion demonstrated over the past weeks. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. The family will host a luncheon on Saturday, January 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME 982-7550
