GEORGE BERNARD SCHMIDT The family is sad to announce George's sudden passing on January 3, 2007 at Morris General Hospital, at the age of 71. George was born at an early age in Transcona, and spent his formative years in Balmoral, Manitoba, where he learned to tie his shoes under the strict tutelage of big sister Gertie. After learning a few more tricks, George went on to teach school in East Braintree and Selkirk, before working for the Winnipeg Tribune and eventually returning to law school at the University of Manitoba. In 1961, he met the love of his life, Claudia, who he married in 1965. In 1967, he moved to Morris, Manitoba, where he continued to live and run his legal practice until his final working day on January 2. George was predeceased by father Benjamin and mother Leah; father and mother-in-law Claude Joyce and Kathleen Privat; brother Harold and sister Gertrude (Harry) Gumprich. Left to reminisce and debate the factual accuracy of George's many stories are his beloved wife Claudia (nee Joyce); sons, Christopher, Eric, Jonathon (a.k.a. Joff) and David, George's angel with a broken wing ; mother-in-law Ruby Joyce; brother Manfried (Joanne) and sisters, Agnes (Eskel) Brurok, Florence Harder, Rita (Charlie) Covernton, and Mae Frailick; sister and brother-in-law Beverley Joyce and Alvin Gervais; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and golfing buddies. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Morris General Hospital. A funeral service will be held Monday, January 8 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Church in Morris (207 Ottawa Ave. West).
