MILLICENT ALICE FREEMAN (nee CRAWLEY) Peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus on December 31, 2006 in her 94th year. Born in Winnipeg, the youngest child of the late Joseph and Susannah Crawley, she was predeceased by her brother William (Bill) of Winnipeg and sister Ella of Thunder Bay. Millie will be sorely missed by her loving husband William (Cecil); son Donald; and grandson Michael. After graduating from high school at 15 with scholastic awards, Millie was employed by the T. Eaton Company as secretary to the General Manager of Western Canada Operations. In the Winnipeg community, she was active in sports, the Winnipeg Snowshoe Club, city dance reviews, and the Girl Guides. It was as a Girl Guide leader on an Guides' exchange to Kenora that she met her future husband when billeted with his sisters. After their marriage in Fort William (Thunder Bay) in 1939, she continued her leadership role with the Girl Guides and was employed as secretary with Philpot and Delgaty, a real estate and insurance firm. In 1959, the family moved to Montreal where she worked briefly for the Town of Baie d'Urfee prior to becoming secretary to the Director General of the West Island Protestant School Board. It was in Montreal that Millie joined Beta Sigma Phi sorority in which she was active until her death. Millie and Cecil returned to Winnipeg in 1967 where Millie was employed as executive secretary to the Dean of the Law Faculty at the University of Manitoba until her retirement in 1977. Upon retirement the couple moved to Ottawa to be close to their son and grandson. Throughout her life, Millie was active in the United Church of Canada in youth activities, youth leadership, and the UC Women's Group. Millie will be fondly remembered by her many relative and friends. A private ceremony and interment took place at Pinecrest Cemetery in Nepean, ON on Friday, January 5. The family requests those who wish to honour Millicent's memory, to donate in her name to the CNIB and Alzheimer Society.
