EMMA OBENDOERFER Emma Obendoerfer (Oma) died peacefully with her family by her side at the Luther Home on January 5, 2007, only a few days before her 99th birthday. Emma was born on January 10, 1908 in Christinenfeld, Russia. She married Peter in 1929 and had a son, Arno, in 1932. Emma and her husband both worked as teachers until 1941 when Peter died en route to Siberia. Oma and Arno then escaped to West Germany and eventually immigrated to Canada, arriving on the Beaverbrae in 1950. Once in Winnipeg, Oma worked in a sewing factory and lived with her extended family on Bannerman Avenue, where she remained until her 97th year. During this time, she cared for many family members; she is predeceased by her three sisters (Elfriede, Eugenie, and Antonie), her two brothers (Gustav and Ernst), and in 1986, her beloved son, Arno. Oma was a strong and independent woman who bravely endured many hardships. She loved her family and enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. Her borscht, perushkies, and ushkies were the highlights of family dinners. Oma loved to garden and to relax on her Hollywood Schaukel in her backyard with her dog, Skippy, close by. In fact, she loved caring for animals and often cooked meals for her pets. She also loved to travel; in her early nineties, she was still traveling the world. We love Oma and we're going to miss her deeply. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Trudy, her grandchildren Peter (Anne-Marie), Karin (Gord), and Thomas (Cherie, and his special friend Val and kids), and her grandchildren Michael, Thomas, Kristin, Patrick, Hannah-Mary, Jayme, Julianne, Robert, and Bradley. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 10 (Oma's 99th birthday) at St-John's Lutheran Church, 370 McKenzie Street, at 10:30 am. We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the staff at the Luther Home for the loving care provided. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent Street, Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3, so that others, like Oma, may benefit from the companionship of animals. neil bardal inc. 949-2200
