MURIEL WINNIFRED CUTHBERT (nee CHAPMAN) 1916 - 2007 Surrounded by her loving husband and family, Muriel died peacefully holding the hands of her loved ones at 1:28 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2007. She had just celebrated her 90th birthday December 30, 2006. Muriel is predeceased by her parents, Samuel and Lottie (Lawrence) Chapman, and all her siblings, Sam, Clare, Bill and Ellen. She is survived by her husband, Chester and children, Ellen Kruger (Robert), Gordon (Sharon), Raymond (Grace), Don and Marion Cuthbert Perron (Bruce); as well as grandchildren, Tim (Leigh Nash) Kruger, Lia Kruger, Jennifer; Alicia (Rob) Heffernan, Michael, Talitha and Kandarah, and Amber (Lee Laminger); and great-grandchildren, Madisen and Sabrina Kruger, Ceara and Kalleigh Heffernan, and Kiara; cousin and friend Gladys Anderson; as well as numerous other relatives. Muriel had four great loves in her life, Chester, her husband of 62 years, her family, her church and music. Muriel's first job was seasonal employment in Eaton's candy kitchen as a teenager. She then worked for a time at Merchant's Consolidated, packing groceries for distribution to retail stores and then was promoted to typist. Muriel's career was as wife, mother and housewife to her family. Her love for all of her family was deep, profound and constantly and clearly expressed through all of their lives. She taught us how to love deeply. She loved to sew and to knit for family, church babies and community children and especially to cook and bake for her family. Muriel had a lifelong commitment to the Christian faith and to her church which evolved through the years as the St. James Church of Christ (Disciples), then Home Street Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and finally as Broadway Disciples United Church, all of Winnipeg. Her childhood commitment was noted in Ruben Burchart's book, The Disciples of Christ in Canada Since 1830. Her principal commitment was to the church choir - as soloist for many years and choir director, and to the Christian Women's Fellowship Circle 4 of which she served as a member and as an officer. She later served in other roles as well, including Elder, Moderator, and representative to and President for the Women's Inter-Church Council of Winnipeg. She also cherished her involvement with the Orianas singing group. A celebration of her life will take place Saturday, January 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Broadway Disciples United Church, 396 Broadway at Kennedy (directly opposite the Legislative building). The Rev. Dr. Raymond A. Cuthbert and the Rev. Brent Denham will co-officiate. Parking is available in lot AF, directly behind the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be given to Broadway Disciples United Church or a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • .: I visited Muriel and Chester's house many times in the mid-1970s, when I still lived in Winnipeg. My friends and I would meet there to discuss books and science fiction with Chester, and Muriel was always there to make us feel welcome as well. Some years ago, the visits began again, and as always, Muriel was always happy to see my friends and I when we came over. May God rest her soul and take good care of her in heaven. - Randy Reichardt - Posted by: Randy Reichardt (Family) on: Jan 27, 2007
