SHIRLEY MAY ROY October 22, 1939 to January 11, 2007 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Roy at the age of 67, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mom was born in Winnipeg, MB, the youngest child of Werner and Lillian Hausegger. She loved to ride horses and in her youth she owned her own horse. She volunteered at Assiniboa Downs exercising the horses there. She went to school in Fort Garry and at the age of 15, she started dating her future husband, James Roy. They were married on her 21st birthday. They moved to Regina for a brief time. Mom and Dad then returned to Winnipeg where they bought the home they would reside in for 43 years up to the present. They raised their family and filled that home with unconditional love and laughter. Throughout their life together Mom and Dad fulfilled their love of travel and spent many summers exploring Canada, the United States, and they went as far afield as Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico. Mom continued her lifelong love of horses and she was thrilled to be able to visit a horse park in Kentucky. They spent many summer days (and winter days too, the nuts!) traipsing through the wilds of Manitoba exploring the Province together. Mom was a member of the Manitoba Orchid Society and the Winnipeg South Photo Club. Many pictures that Mom took while travelling were entered into photography contests and some won prizes. Some of her pictures were hung in a gallery and sold to bring pleasure to others. Mom loved to read, knit, do cross-stitch, and crossword puzzles. She had a fascination with geology and learned how to polish gemstones. She had a beautiful singing voice that she has passed on to her granddaughter. She had a ready smile and her giggle made all who heard it smile too. She was honest, kind and generous. Her family will remember her love and fierce devotion, her humour and laughter, and we will miss her terribly. She died as she lived, with a positive attitude and a smile, and thinking of her family before herself. Her memory will be lovingly cherished by her husband of 46 years, James David Roy and her children, Kim Zamkotowich, Greg Roy and Scott Roy. She told me many times that she loved her daughters-in-law as though they were her own and that she was so pleased her sons had brought them to be part of our family. Denise and Karla will miss her too. Her grandchildren will remember the desserts snuck under the table and the disastrous attempts at teaching knitting! They will also remember her hugs, her laughter and her love. Sara, Matthew, Josh, Mandy and Megan will remember their Grandma. Also left to mourn her memory are her mother-in-law, Doris Roy and her siblings, Eva Barton (Phil), Elsie Williamson (Andy) and Robert Hausegger (Barb) and her in-laws, Judy Taylor and Doug Roy, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She truly enjoyed Wednesday morning breakfasts and shopping with her sisters. She loved you all very much. I know if Mom were here she would tell us all: I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterflow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways. Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun. Of happy memories that I leave when life is done. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate Mom's life is to be held on Tuesday, January 16 at 10:00 a.m. at Thomson In the Park , 1291 McGillivray Blvd. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Riverview Hospital for the excellent care they provided during Mom's last week. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mom to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. THOMSON IN THE PARK FUNERAL HOME AND CEMETERY 1291 MCGILLIVRAY BLVD.
