GUNNAR EYTHOR HELGASON May 30, 1922 January 11, 2007 Peacefully, on Thursday, January 11, 2007 at the Fisher Branch Personal Care Home, Gunnar Helgason, aged 84 years of Riverton. He leaves to mourn his passing his only son Glen; sister Gudrun Dryden of Selkirk; niece Colleen Dryden (Doug) of Edmonton; nephews, Allan Dryden (Val) of East Selkirk and Bruce Dryden (Melanie) of Gimli; great-niece Lauren and great-nephews, Kevin, Jordan and Matthew; sisters-in-law, Mary Horvath of Arborg, Anne Pearson (Don) of Kelowna, Margaret Finnson of Arborg; brothers-in-law, Louis Horvath (Sophie) of Arborg, Martin Horvath (Josie) of Arnes; niece Cathy (Glenn) of Arborg and many other relatives. Gunnar was predeceased by his wife Rose; parents, Helgi and Sigurros; in-laws, Mary and Joseph Horvath and brother-in-law Walter (Mac) Dryden. Gunnar was born at the home farm at Hnausa called Helgastadur, the only child of Helgi and Sigurros Helgason. He married his beloved Rose who predeceased him in June of 1983. Gunnar attended Hnausa school, and after school was finished he helped his dad on the farm, eventually taking it over. He was very good mechanically and could fix most anything. He also fished for one season on Lake Winnipeg with his Dad. Gunnar was very community minded, he served on the council of the municipality of Bifrost from 1957 to 1980 and served as reeve in the same RM from 1980 to 1986. He was a also a member of the Eastern Interlake Planning Board, the Interlake Development Corp., Manitoba Municipal Board, a delegate for Co-op Implements from 1976 to 1987, the Evergreen Regional Library Board from 1965 to 1980 and was made a life member in 1982. Gunnar spent nearly seven years in the Fisher Branch nursing home. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of the home for their excellent care and kindness shown to him during his stay there. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 20 at 2:00 p.m. in the Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran Church with Pastor Trudy Thorarinson officiating. Interment to take place at a later date in the Hnausa west cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gunnar's memory can be made to the Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice. Gilbart Funeral Homes, Selkirk and Gimli in care of arrangements.
