Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELWOOD HUBERT SLY May 23, 1926 - January 14, 2007 It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Elwood (Elmer) Sly. Dad was born to Andrew and Violet Sly in Neepawa, Manitoba and was one of eight children. In 1944, Dad enlisted in the First Canadian Paratroops successfully completing his training at Shilo, Manitoba. In 1948 he married the love of his life Dorothy. This loving union lasted 53 years until her passing in 2002. Shortly after this marriage dad began his career as a City of Winnipeg Firefighter, retiring in 1989 at the rank of Deputy Chief. He proudly wore this uniform for 41 years. After his retirement mom and dad traveled extensively and enjoyed their time together. We will always remember our father and grandfather for his ability to entertain all ages with a story or a joke. He will be missed. Dad is survived by son Murray (Barb) of Calgary; daughter Valarie; grandchildren, Greg (Rita) Sly of Calgary, Michael Sly of Regina, Erin Sacco (Ryan) of Edmonton, Derrick (Melissa) and Jeff Sacco of Winnipeg; sisters, Wilma (Walter) Marsch, Shirley Osborne of Winnipeg; brother Eric (Maureen) Sly of Edmonton, and brothers-in-law, Don James and Herman Couillard. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Firefighters Burn Fund Inc., 303-83 Garry Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4J9. Elwood's family would like to express their sincere thanks to Dr. H. Johnson, Dr. I. Maxwell and staff at Victoria General Hospital, Palliative Home Care nurses and 8A staff at St. Boniface Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 19, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., with a reception to follow.
