EARL EDWIN BAXTER It is with great sadness the family announces the death of Earl on January 18, 2007 at the Grace Hospice. His parents, James Edwin and Gertrude Baxter (nee Burr), and his twin brothers, Donald and Ronald predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean Jessie (nee Piper); his daughters, Sandra Pieri (Clifford) and Catherine Aitken (John); his grandchildren, Jennifer Marr (Hubert) and John Pieri (Susan); his three great-grandchildren, Megan and Gregory Marr and Samantha Pieri, and his sister-in-law Betty (Baxter). He was born in Bloomfield, Ontario September 9, 1920, and grew up helping in the family canning business. He was a graduate of Queens University earning a B.A. in Mathematics and Economics and a Masters Degree in Public Finance. After service as an Army officer in the Second World War, he entered the public service as an Economist in the Department of Reconstruction. In 1947 he transferred to the Canadian Grain Commission serving as Chief Statistician in Fort William, as Director of Economics and Statistics in Winnipeg and ultimately as Executive Director of the Commission. He played a major role in the introduction and development of electronic accounting and communication in the Canadian grain industry, chairing a number of grain studies. He also played a key role in the metrification of the Canadian grain industry. In 1977 he led a special grain mission to China. In 1984 he received a Meritorious Service Award from the Governor General of Canada. He was a long-time member of the Mouse Trap Club and enjoyed all of its activities. He was very passionate about giving back to society. In community life he was active in Boy Scouts, home and school, and Church. He was a founding member of Westworth United Church, serving on its board and subsequently on the boards of Westminster United Church and Knox United Church. He was also a member of the Board of Manitoba Health Organization. Later in life he committed many hours to the Salvation Army as a member of the boards of Grace Hospital and Golden West Lodge. But above all he was a family man, devoted to Jean, his daughters and their families. He always had time to offer guidance, support and encouragement to anyone in the family. He was the centre of the family. We will remember his love and kindness always. We would like to express our sincere thanks to Dr. Pat Harris and the Grace Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Grace Hospice, 260 Booth Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 3R5 or Grace CancerCare, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7.
