DR. FRANKLIN WINTHROP JONES On January 18, 2007, Dr. Franklin Winthrop (Frank) Jones died peacefully in his sleep at the Misericordia Health Centre. He is survived by his wife Ruth; son Chris and his wife Nancy of Saskatoon; daughter Janet and her husband Murray of Sechelt, BC; grandchildren, Gabriel Jones of Vancouver, Luke Jones of Ling-ya District, Taiwan; Sarah and her husband Peter Rourke, their children, Finley and Layne of Invermere, BC; nieces, Trudie Richards of Halifax and Andrea Roache and her husband Terry, her children, Casey, Andrew and Jeffrey, of Barrie, ON; nephew James Richards of Charlottetown, his children, Jarren and Dean. Frank is also survived by his stepdaughter Maureen Walker Neuendorff and her husband Rex, their children, Laura and Scott of Winnipeg. Frank was predeceased by his first wife Doris to whom he was married for 59 years; his parents, Harold and Dora Jones; sisters, Florence Jones of Winnipeg and Phyllis Richards of Toronto. Born in St. Vital on October 1, 1915, Frank attended public schools there and then enrolled in the University of Manitoba. After graduation, he enrolled in the University of Alberta and received his Doctor of Dentistry diploma - then enrolled in the University of Minnesota where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery diploma on August 23, 1937. In 1940, Frank enlisted in the Army Dental Corps and was posted to Rivers, MB until 1945 when he was discharged and returned to private practice in Winnipeg. Frank enjoyed being a dentist - enjoyed getting to know so many wonderful patients - and enjoyed being a member of the Manitoba Dental Association serving as President and Past President. Frank retired in 1981. At the age of 11 and in all kinds to weather, Frank delivered newspapers to many homes in St. Vital and was also a caddy at Niakwa Country Club for many years. (It was here that Frank developed a love for the game of golf - a game he played until he was 90.) Frank became a member of the Winnipeg Canoe Club before he joined his favourite club, Niakwa, where he made many friends who enjoyed one another's company both on and off the golf course. In 2005, Frank was presented with an Honorary Life Membership in Niakwa Country Club. For many years, Frank and his family were also members of the Winnipeg Winter Club. Franklin Winthrop Jones enjoyed a long and very happy life with a loving family and many, many friends. His dry sense of humour added sparkle to many conversations and will long be remembered by all who knew him, especially by the family he loved. Sincere thanks and appreciation must be given to the Dr. Sheldon Permack for his care and understanding for many years, and to Sandy Singleton, his assistant, who helped the medicine go down . Sincere thanks and appreciation must also be given to the doctors, nurses and aides at both the Victoria General Hospital, and the Misericordia Health Centre, for helping ease Frank's journey. A memorial service is being held at Niakwa Country Club on Monday, January 29 at 1:00 p.m. In accordance with Frank's wishes, cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined, but if friends so wish, donations to the Alzheimer's Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or to St. Mark's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund would be appreciated.
