HEATHER MAY MCCAINE - DAVIES 1948 - 2007 It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Heather McCaine-Davies, 58, on January 18, 2007 at Concordia Place. Predeceased by her father Gordon McCaine and grandparents, Johann and Kristbjörg Peterson, Andrew and May McCaine, Heather will be lovingly remembered by her mother Olive McCaine; children, Alfred, Kristen (Tyler Lane) and Michael Davies; grandchildren, Reilly and Talitha; brother and sister Terrance and Susan McCaine; and many relatives and friends. Heather was born in Winnipeg June 25, 1948 and grew up in East Kildonan. She attended Miles Macdonell Collegiate and graduated in 1977 from the University of Manitoba, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. While there she held the office of Lady Stick in the Faculty of Arts. During this time she married Al Davies and together they started a publishing company. One of its divisions, typart*, soon became a leader in the field of visual communications. In the early 1980s, this successful company went on to provide prepress services for a fledgling newspaper, the Winnipeg Sun. Heather thrived in the publishing industry. After selling typart*, she lent her voice and skills to a new sector of the community with the purchase of Seniors Today. She developed it into a twice-monthly publication featuring news, information and entertainment for older Manitobans. As publisher and editor, Heather created a newspaper that spoke to and for seniors in Winnipeg with a depth that had been absent in local publications. The company also published numerous resource guides for seniors as well as Business People Magazine. In 1998 she sold the business after a bout of illness. The Province of Manitoba acknowledged Heather's contribution to Manitoba seniors in 1998 when the Manitoba Council on Aging honoured her with a recognition award. But retirement was not a word in Heather's vocabulary. Always seeking a new challenge and unable to refuse a request for help, she lent her expertise as a volunteer to the Oakbank Community Club and introduced innovative fundraising events. Her passion for words once more found an outlet and she developed the Oakbank Community Club Newsletter. Taking responsibility for its overall production and distribution, it became a popular information source for the club as well as an important fundraising activity. Heather lived life to the fullest and pursued all her interests with the same boundless enthusiasm and energy as she did her work. She was immensely proud of her Icelandic heritage. She loved making a beautiful home for her family, sewing, gardening, summers at the cottage in Lake of the Woods. Her favourite time of year and holiday was Christmas, when she enjoyed hosting bountiful family feasts. Most of all, Heather loved her children. She will be sadly missed, but remains always in our hearts. Cremation has taken place and a private celebration of Heather's life will be held. Donations in Heather's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
