DR. CHARLES MALKIN Charlie passed away peacefully on Saturday at Victoria Hospital. He was 86. He is survived by Sheila, his wife of 55 years, his son Murray of Toronto, and his daughter Laurel Malkin and her husband David Folk and their children, Alli and Josh, of South Bend, Ind. His grandchildren were the light of his life and every day he wanted a report on what Alli and Josh were up to. Charlie's parents Mendl and Golda had seven children, Betty, Ben, Sam, Sol, Charlie and his twin brother Alex, and Aaron. Only Aaron survives. The Malkins grew up in the north end of Winnipeg where they operated Malkin's General Store. Charlie attended St. John's High School and then went to the University of Manitoba where he earned a B.A. Finally he went to the University of Toronto where he got his dental degree in 1946. Upon returning to Winnipeg he set up his practice, where he shared a building with his brother Sol, a medical doctor. He worked until he was 65, deciding to retire after heart bypass surgery. Charlie had a wonderful life, travelling the world with Sheila and perfecting his hobby as a photographer, where his patience paid off with world-class photos. But he was more than work. He believed in giving back to his community and served it in many ways. He was president of Alpha Omega, his dental fraternity; he was president of his synagogue, the Herzlia, twice; he was on the board of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet; and he also served on the board of the Reh-Fit Centre. Charlie never was one to toot his own horn, but he left this world a better place than it was when he found it. He spent many enjoyable hours at the YMHA, YMCA and the Rady Centre, working out and hanging out, schmoozing with his many friends. He loved a good debate and was well read on many subjects, from politics and religion to medicine and sports. He loved time spent with friends and family. He loved celebrating the Jewish holidays with his many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews and devouring Sheila's gourmet cooking. But he especially loved a bowl of chocolate ice cream or a meal at the Shanghai, probably his favourite restaurant in the world. The family would like to thank Dr. Elizabeth Giesbrecht, Dr. J. Barwinsky, Dr. Hugh Smith and Dr. Al Pacin for their wonderful care. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Rady Centre or the Herzlia would be appreciated. The funeral will be today at the Herzlia at the corner of Block and Fleet at noon.
