PATRICIA JUNE CARROLL (nee SHINN) It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear Mother Patricia Carroll in Winnipeg on January 24, 2007. Mother was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Stanley in 1975; her parents, Elsie and Fred in 1968 and her sister Kathy in 1988. She is survived by her daughter Diane (Don) of Vancouver; son Stephen (Janet) of Winnipeg and granddaughters, Christine and Catherine; her brothers, Peter (Mid) and family, Concord, California and Clive (Jean) and family, Portsmouth, England and her loving, caring and beloved extended family in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Texas, Florida, Arizona, Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria. Mother was born in Portsmouth, England in 1926, a daughter of a Royal Navy family. She attended school in England and Malta. She met the love of her life during the war years and 10 months after her wedding, came to Canada as a war-bride in 1946 leaving behind her entire family, all she knew and meeting her new sisters and brothers, mother and father. Two children soon came along and so began the adventures of married life with Stan. Mother's education led her to a secretarial vocation. While her typing and short-hand speed was nothing short of amazing, even more amazing was her patience and supportive resolve every time Stan announced either a new residence or a new career direction. In no short order she was back again in England, back and forth across Canada, several residences in Winnipeg and Emerson, Manitoba (twice). She made every move, every new school, every new home an adventure. With Stan's failing health, they moved to a milder climate settling in Vancouver in 1968. There she was proud to be employed with the Government of Canada, a career lasting to her retirement in 1990. After the death of Stan in 1975, she moved back to Winnipeg, back to her extended family which she held so dear to her heart. Growing up with our Mother, we never knew her to say no ; instead she would say in her quiet and gentle way try this. This looks interesting . She was always supportive in everything and anything we could dream up and extolled in us the virtues of tenacity and perseverance to compliment skill and education. And in this she was our role model for she always had a way of seeing something positive no matter how ill our father became from his war injuries, how often we moved or how dark the moment. And oh how we laughed recalling the moments of seeming darkest despair. Mother would set goals of her expectations which to her were only matters of fact. Any barrier to her was only a momentary pause to gain stronger footing. She was our family historian knowing every date, every minute detail of every family member able to place it all with a perspicuity to our family values and her obligation to duty and responsibility. And she could draw on a wit and sense of humor so fine, it could transcend any hindering doubt or difficult moment. People, especially youth, were drawn to her for she made a lasting impression on all she met. She admired education and higher learning enrolling at the University of Winnipeg studying literature, history and political science. In all she did, she gave so much of herself to all she met content to have been able in some small way to leave a positive lasting effect. Mother spent her last months at the Riverview Health Centre and her children are forever grateful for the kindnesses and compassion shown by all; Mona, Maureen, Vicki, Crystal and Carmen, to name but a few. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 1, 2007 at St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Helmsdale and Henderson Hwy., Winnipeg at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Diane Guildford officiating. A short tea will follow with internment beside her husband at Green Acres. A family gathering will follow at the residence of her son. I'll be looking at the moon But I'll be seeing you . GREEN ACRES Funeral Home and Cemetery Hwy. #1 E. at Navin, (204) 222-3241
