John was born on February 3, 1913 in the District of Stuartburn, MB, the oldest of 11 children. He grew up on the family farm, working with his father. John and Anne were married on May 23, 1938 and together they worked on farms in the Emerson and Stonewall areas and then back to the Emerson area in the forties. In 1953, together they bought their dream farm east of Stony Mountain. He and Anne worked the farm as a mixed/dairy operation until 2004 when they officially retired and sold the farm, but still remaining in the home with the aid of wonderful, caring Home Care workers. John has touched the lives of a great many people from young to old, his stories that he loved to tell, especially to a captive audience, will remain in the hearts of many. He loved company and they were always made welcome and invited in for a cup of coffee and some of Anne's homemade bread and never leaving without a handful of peppermints for the road. John believed in helping thy neighbour, even if he didn't know them, and was a environmentalist long before it became popular, preserving bird and other animal nests in the fields each spring as he was planting his crops. He believed in working hard, eating good and loved reading history books even to the end. He could be heard reciting The Wreck of the Hesperus or singing the forties tunes, while working around the yard or out in the field with his many tractors. Forever in our hearts, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, uncle and friend. A very special thanks to Dr. Pinniger and all of the staff at the Doctor Evelyn Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care of our beloved John for the past six weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stony Mountain United Church, care of Audrey Rossnagel.
