MORRIS KAPLAN Morris Kaplan, aged 82 years, died January 29, 2007. Morris is survived by his niece Carol Kilmetis; five great-nephews and one great-niece. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Fanny Kaplan and his brother Barney Kaplan. The great love of Morris' life was the races. He was an owner, a breeder, and a Handicapper par excellence. He served many years in the chairmanship of the Manitoba Horse Racing Commission which under his guidance worked assiduously to assure the long term viability of Assiniboia Downs Racetrack. In fact, the true moment of glory for Morris was the victory of his two year old Ruling Lark in the 1968 Winnipeg Futurity. Her offspring was runner-up in the Manitoba Derby a decade later. Morris was a contract bridge Life Master, a fine athlete, and a devoted friend. Funeral services will be held at the Chesed Shel Emes, 1023 Main Street, on Thursday, February 1 at 9:00 a.m. with burial at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his pals, Myrna Charach, David Wolinsky, Merlin Materi, Herbert Bayda, Maxwell Wolinsky and Hebert Liffmann. Donations in memory of Morris Kaplan may be made to the Wellness Institute, 1075 Leila Avenue.
