MURIEL EDNA NEUMAN Peacefully at the Victoria Hospital, on January 29, 2007, at the age of 91 years. Muriel will be lovingly remembered by her husband Norman; daughter Joanne Ball, Garland Texas; sons, Roger, Oakville, ON, Murray, Kelowna, BC, Michael, Winnipeg, MB, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Muriel was born September 7, 1915, one of eight children of Thomas Edwin and Louise Fultz, residents of West Kildonan. Two of her childhood years were spent in Sackville, NS where she was deeply impressed by the beauty of the area, especially the apple blossoms. She and her beloved sister Emily would walk many miles visiting relatives. After her return to West Kildonan, she attended Victory and Centennial Schools and upon completing Grade XI, she was awarded a silver medal. She then attended Jon Bjarnason Academy and Winnipeg Normal School. She taught in the Consolidated School of Woodlands for a couple of years, then joined the staff of West Kildonan and Winnipeg. At Normal School in Winnipeg, she first met Norman Neuman, the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Neuman of Manitou, MB. She and Norm married in 1944, spent two years in Trenton, ON, then took up residence in Fort Garry, where they raised their four children. This kept her busy enough, but she nevertheless served as a Sunday School Superintendent for many years, first in General Byng School, then at Fort Garry United Church. She was a longtime member of the Wildewood Chapter IODE, holding all offices during more than 25 years. She served on the Board of Session, and as Secretary of Session, of Fort Garry United Church. Muriel was always interested in education. She attended the University of Winnipeg, part of it at night school, and in 1973, at the age of 58, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, at the same time as her son Murray received his degree. She was devoted to her family, and was intensely proud of her children. It was in large measure her influence that led to all of them attaining University degrees. Muriel valued her association with IODE and Marathon Bridge members. She enjoyed swimming, golfing, bowling, summers at their cottage at Gimli, travelling with Norm throughout Canada and USA, cruises to the Panama Canal zone and Alaska , and visits to England and the continent. Special in their memory was a visit to Singapore, where their daughter Joanne was living at the time, and the Alaska cruise, which was a gift from their children on their 50th Anniversary. Over the years, Muriel and Norm enjoyed Celebrity Concerts at the old auditorium, the Symphony Concerts, and later the Travellogues. A rather unique incident for her was the saving of a life. While she was on holiday in the Lake of the Woods area, a woman sitting on a rock fell into the water. Unable to swim, she called for help. Muriel dove in and managed to bring her to shore. In her last few years, her health deteriorated. The family wishes to express thanks and deep appreciation for the care provided by Manitoba Home Care and the nurses who came to attend her needs and enabled her to remain in the home she loved as long as possible. Also appreciated is the compassionate care she received at Victoria Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Victoria General Hospital Foundation, 2340 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB R3T 9Z9 or a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd., Fort Garry, at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 2. Arrangements entrusted to: Chapel Lawn Funeral Home And Reception Centre 885-9715
