ROGER MARSHALL SMITH 1918 - 2007 It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Roger Marshall Smith on Wednesday January 31, 2007. Roger is survived and deeply missed by Margaret, his wife of 59 years; his sons, Bruce (Linda), Murray (Linda); his daughters, Pat (Denis), Terry (Garry) and grandchildren, Ben (Terri), Nicki, Wes and Dana, Chris, Cory (Tara), and Jaclyn (Jason). He was predeceased by his brother Bill (Henni). Roger was born in Winnipeg on September 12, 1918 and lived most of his life in Manitoba. He graduated in Physics from the University of Manitoba before joining the Canadian Army in 1940. He was transferred to the British Army in 1944 until 1946, achieving the rank of Major. Upon his return he married his sweetheart Margaret Pascoe whom he met at Victoria Beach. In 1947 Roger joined Atomic Energy of Canada in Chalk River where he became the Supervisor of NRX Reactor. In 1958 he moved his young family to Vienna, Austria where he was on loan to International Atomic Energy Agency as the head of the Safeguards division. Subsequently dad played a major role in the planning and development of Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment and the town of Pinawa, moving there in 1963. He and Margaret enjoyed living in Pinawa while working and in retirement. Many happy times were spent with family and friends at their Shangri-La, their cottage at Victoria Beach. Roger volunteered many hours with various organizations including: Boy Scouts of Canada, Canadian Executive Services Organization, Pan Am Games and Manitoba Summer Games. One of his proudest moments came when he was inducted into the Order of Manitoba in 2000 based on his work as a nuclear scientist, volunteer and efforts in the planning of Whiteshell nuclear research laboratories and the town of Pinawa. In his leisure time Roger's passions were Victoria Beach, travel, photography, gardening and enjoying his seven grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate Roger's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6 at the Lutheran Church in Pinawa. In lieu of flowers donations will be gratefully accepted by the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba.
