WALTER HAROLD BURTNIAK 1926 - 2007 It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Wally on February 1, 2007 at the St. Boniface Hospital. Wally was born December 15, 1926 in Fork River, MB to Tina and Harry Burtniak. He served with the Fort Garry Horse Reserve Militia in 1942, 1943, and trained in Shilo during his summer holidays. Wally joined the C.N.R. in 1943, working as an assistant agent, operator and agent in Manitoba, Ontario, Minnesota and Saskatchewan, until his retirement in June 1985 as station agent at Hudson Bay, SK. Upon retiring to Winnipeg, Wally enjoyed many years close to his family. Favourite pastimes were carpet and lawn bowling, and the weekly coffee klatch with his C.N. retirees. He was an avid curler and enjoyed participating in bonspiels. Amongst Wally's affiliations were the C.N. Pensioners Association of Winnipeg, Morse Telegraph Club, Vintage Automotive Society, Midwestern Rail Association, Hudson Bay Elks #456, M.S.O.S., Golden Rule Seniors and Appleton Estates Seniors Club. Wally was predeceased by his parents and step-mother Xenia; sisters, Molly Solomon and Mary Moodie; stepsister, Betty; brothers-in-law, Will Moodie, John Solomon and Doug Whaley, and long-time dear friend, Marg Papuga. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by sister Vonnie Whaley of Abbotsford, BC; nieces, Angela Moodie (Frank), Darlene Sill (Jack), Charlene Birdsall (Rick) and Sharon Watson, all of Winnipeg, and Valerie Solomon (Merv) of Westbank, BC; nephews, Peter Moodie (Gloria) of Selkirk and John Solomon (Darlene) of Regina, as well as great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and many friends. The family acknowledges and thanks the nursing staff at St. Boniface Hospital and Misericordia Health Centre for the support and care which Wally received. A service of remembrance will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 8, 2007 at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy. No. 1 E. at Navin Road, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wally's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200 - 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.
