FLORENCE SMITH Peacefully on February 7, 2007 at the Betel Home in Selkirk, Florence Smith, aged 90 years, passed away with her family at her side. Florence leaves surviving two daughters Terri Campbell of Burnaby, BC and Janis Merkel (Philip) of Petersfield; one son Greg (Laura) of Petersfield; granddaughters, Kristi Mathew (George) and daughter Sarah of Winnipeg; Jennifer Masniuk (Scott) and their children Sydney and Hayden of Petersfield; and Jona Barton and son Michael of Winnipeg and numerous other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her son Orville in 1975, husband Russell in 1988, sisters Emma and Alyce and a brother George. Florence moved from England with her family to a homestead in Petersfield, Manitoba when she was nine years old. As a young woman she moved to Selkirk where she worked at Berrisford General Store, Tapley's, Selkirk Florist and the Betel Home (as a health care aid). Florence was a friend to all with an infectious laugh that carried all across the room. She was very easy going but loved to share her opinions with everyone. After retirement she traveled with her sister Emma on many trips. She loved to play Bingo and the machines . She volunteered for the NDP, the Selkirk Steelers and the Selkirk House of Economy for many years. Florence lived independently until she was 88 years old then moved her residence to the Betel Home in Selkirk. Her kindness and laughter will be missed by everyone. A memorial service will be held on Friday February 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
