SHIRLEY AILEEN ALEXANDER (nee FREEDY) It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beautiful and loving mother, Shirley, on February 11, 2007 at the age of 80 years. She will be sadly missed by her children, Pat Doerksen (Bob), Karen Bartlette (Pierre) both from Alberta, Kevin (Brenda) from Ontario, Jack (Pat), Terry (Norma), Doug (Charlene) and Kristine Siwicki (Jerry) all from Winnipeg. She also leaves to cherish her memory 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She will be lovingly missed by sisters, Verna Pedlar (Roy) and Diane Wiebe (Abe); her brother Elwood (Fern), and sisters-in-law, Helen, Iris, Valerie and Shelagh. She will be fondly remembered by all her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Pearl Freedy; her sisters Muriel and Grace. She also lost her beloved husband Jack on June 29, 2005. Shirley was born February 24, 1926 in Dry River, MB and spent her early years on the family farm. In 1943 Shirley and her sister Grace went to Teacher's College in Winnipeg and it was there that she met her future husband Jack. She wrote letters to Jack when he served in England during the Second World War. She taught school in the Rosehill District in Southern Manitoba for a few years and then took nurse's training in Brandon. She began dating Jack when he returned from England and they were married in 1948. Shortly after they were married, Pat, the first of their seven children was born and Shirley spent the next 26 years raising her children. She joined the work force in 1974 when Jack was battling cancer. She worked for the Manitoba Government with Family Services until her retirement in 1991. Shirley was a loving and nurturing wife, mother and grandmother. There was always a hug and a hot cookie and a spot on Grandma's knee for all the grandkids and great-grandkids when they came to visit. Shirley spent her retirement years pursuing her hobbies of knitting, crocheting and oil painting. We will all treasure the beautiful paintings and baby shawls she created for us. She also enjoyed working on the crossword puzzles and Tuesday night bingo with her lady friends. Mom was the wife, mother, mother-in-law and genuinely lovely human being that we should aspire to be. She had a big, giving heart that in the end was the one thing that failed her. Shirley passed away surrounded by her family. The family wishes to extend our thanks to the staff in the I.C.U. at Seven Oaks Hospital for their kind and compassionate care of our mother. Memorial Service will be on Friday, February 16, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street with The Reverend Rod Sprange officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. Mom we will miss you and love you forever. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
