BEATRICE ALICE ARMSTRONG (nee HUME) 1904 2007 On February 13, 2007, at the age of 102 years, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law and aunt passed away. She will be lovingly remembered by her son Keith (Iris); her daughter Jean Swift (Glenn); her grandchildren, Carol Elias (Monte) of Kailua, Hawaii, Douglas Armstrong (Evelyn), Bill Swift (Cathy) of Oshawa, Jill Armstrong (John Bakator) of Calgary, and Catherine Swift of Vancouver, and her 13 great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn her death are her sister-in-law Ruth (Armstrong) Clarke and her nieces, nephews and their families. Beatrice was born in Oak River, MB where she lived until coming into Winnipeg to attend Wesley College in 1921. Upon graduation, she attended Normal School and began her teaching career in Waskada, followed by years in Hamiota and Pine Falls where she became principal. In 1934 she married E. A. (Eddie) Armstrong, one-time sports and city editor of the Winnipeg Free Press. Beatrice was predeceased by her husband on February 15, 1950. Also predeceasing her were her parents, John and Alice Hume, and her brother Aubrey, all of Oak River. In September of 1950 she resumed her teaching career in Winnipeg School Division #1 with postings to Machray and Lord Roberts Schools. She was a dedicated teacher and was respected by both her colleagues and her pupils. She was an athlete herself in school and at college where she did track and played basketball to renown. Through her marriage to Eddie she became an avid sports fan with particular interests in football and hockey. With her husband she traveled to many Grey Cups and Junior Hockey Championships. In more recent years, her greatest sport interest centered on televised curling, a sport she did herself, a sport her father (John) and brother (Aubrey) pursued with success and later her daughter-in-law, Iris, and her grandson, Douglas. The Game of Bridge, her grandchildren, as well as her interest in local and world events kept Beatrice's mind fully engaged. After the untimely death of her husband, Beatrice was fortunate to have close friends who were also avid to play their weekly Saturday evening bridge game. These good friends, who were like family, have also predeceased her. For the past several years, Beatrice resided at the Waverley where she made new bridge acquaintances and received warm attention from the staff. The family thanks Dr. R. J. Hayward for his care and encouragement over the past several years. The family also would like to thank Unit 4 nursing staff at Victoria Hospital for their compassionate care. Cremation has taken place. At her request, there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or to a charity of your choice.
