ROMAN MAMCHYN After a brief illness on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at Misericordia Hospital, Roman Mamchyn passed away at the age of 102 years. Roman was predeceased by his wife Natalia on February 23, 2000. He leaves to mourn his nephew Oleh Kobylecky, his wife Donna and their son Oleksa (Toronto); niece Martha Kochanowski and family (Philadelphia), and his sister-in-law Valentina Kobylecky (Montreal). Other relatives left behind include Christina Holowinsky, Allana Holowinsky, along with her husband Peter and their daughter Kateryna, Marika Holowinsky and husband Ivan, Sophie Watson and family, and Vera Chreptowsky and family (Chicago). Roman will be especially missed by his dear friends, Dr. Taras and Mrs. Emma Snihurowych, as well as Ihor and Marusia Gawrachynsky and family. Many other friends and neighbours, Joe Muirhead and wife Joie and family, Joanne Kuntz and Curtis Makar will also miss and remember Roman's kind heart and strong spirit. Roman lived a long and full life. He was born in Sokol, Western Ukraine. He graduated from high school in Tarnopol and completed his university studies in Krakow, Poland, where he received a Masters Degree in Agricultural Engineering. After having been displaced from their home and country during the Second World War, Roman arrived in Winnipeg with his wife, Natalia, in 1950, having travelled throughout many parts of the world on their journey here. In Canada, Roman worked for the Manitoba Provincial Government as an assistant to the head gardener at the Legislative grounds. For 25 years, Roman was a parish member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Christ the King and later, for a similar length of time, a member of St. Nicholas Parish. Prayers will be sung 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 16 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 9:30 a.m., Saturday, February 17 at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave. with a Basilian Father officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. A special thank you to the staffs of Health Sciences Centre (D-3), Riverview (3 West) and Misericordia (5th Floor) Hospitals who caringly tried to make Roman's stay as comfortable as possible.
