Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJACK D. GILMAN With great sorrow we announce the passing of Jack David Gilman on Monday February 5, 2007. Jack, or Zaida, as he was affectionately known by all his five grandchildren, was born in Winnipeg on May 19, 1925, and grew up in the North End. Most of his early years were spent in a three bedroom house on Pritchard Avenue near Powers, where he and his seven siblings all shared important duties; feeding the horse, chopping wood and making the trek to Magnus and Salter to get blocks of ice for the icebox. Zaida attended some of Winnipeg's classic schools King Edward, Strathcona, Aberdeen and St. John's High School. He also attended Talmud Torah on Magnus, and was a member of the youth group C for A, (Confectus Adulescentium) that still meets even today. While Dad served in the Navy for two years during the Second World War, his real service life began on December 29, 1964, when Dad married Charna Kay. When his children Anita, Cara and Maury arrived in 1966, 1967, and 1970, Dad achieved an even higher rank as Jack of all Trades . Family was always first with Daddy. He put everyone before himself. There was nothing he wouldn't do to ensure everyone was happy and taken care of. Equally there was nothing we couldn't talk to him about, no matter what the situation was. Always on the move, Dad organized family car trips, science projects and anything that needed fixing. But Dad's life wasn't all work; there was time to play as well. Jack enjoyed curling and bowling. More recently, he enjoyed cooking, particularly with his grandchildren, who will always remember making chocolate chip cookies with him. Regardless of work or play, family remained the focal point of Dad's life. Even in his passing, Dad was still looking out for us. When recently a minor flood occurred in the basement, Dad had already prepared us for it by putting boxes up on blocks. Thanks Dad. Jack was predeceased by his parents Molly and Samuel Gilman, his siblings, Ida Cohen, Izzy Gilman, Abie Gilman, Bessie Miller, and Harry Gilman. He is survived by his wife Charna and their children, Anita (Murray Shiffman), Cara (Tim Stephens), and Maury (Rachel) Gilman. Zaida will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Geoffry, Liora, Melissa, Sara, and Hannah. Jack is also survived by his siblings Dina (Mark) Frankel, Ronnie Gilman, numerous in-laws, and nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Chesed Shel Emes on February 7, 2007. Pallbearers were Iser Kay, Sam and Willie Miller, David and Benjie Kay, and Jonathon Burns. Honorary pallbearers were Irwin Burns, Mark Frankel, Jack Kay, Neil Cohen, Farley Cates, Ron Cantor, Murray Shiffman, and Tim Stephens. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
