EDNA SANDEVER In the early hours of February 18, 2007, our beloved mother, nanny and great-nanny passed away peacefully in her sleep. Edna Sandever was born August 6, 1909 in Halifax, NS and resided on the East Coast until 1984 when she moved to Winnipeg to live with her daughter, Winnie. Nanny married a young naval officer, Fred, in 1925, and their union created seven children. With a young husband often away at sea, including a five-year stint during the Second World War, raising her young family prevented nanny from working outside of the home. Nanny's homemaking skills served her children and many of her nieces and nephews well. She has passed on her talent for homemaking and her high-moral values to the generations that came after, and for this we are thankful. Nanny overcame many tragedies in her life: surviving the Halifax explosion of 1917, holding two of her young babies, Marion and June, as they succumbed to pneumonia, and then losing two more children, Roy and Iva, in their middle adult years, did not break Nanny's spirit...it made her stronger. Nanny approached life with humour, grace and qualities that epitomize the essence of a lady. Coupled with these attributes, was a steadfast strength and quick tongue that was able to make the strongest-willed re-evaluate their sometimes misguided actions. She will be missed. Nanny's faith was evident in her belief of a higher power, Jehovah, and we, the family are grateful to the wonderful brothers and sisters of the Charleswood Congregation who ensured she remained an active part of their congregation. Thank you to Art for dedicating himself to maintaining the yard work for Nanny. Thank you to Tom for accompanying Nanny back to Nova Scotia and many, many thanks to Nanny's friend, Loa, who was a constant companion and confidant of Nanny's. Along with the aforementioned, Nanny was predeceased by her husband Fred, and six brothers and sisters, Ernest, George, Harold, Bill, Lilly, May, and her grandson, Leslie. Left to cherish Nanny's memory are Winnie, Robin (Mark), Dustin, Teddy, Marjorie (Sonny), Sonny Jr., and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A celebration of Nanny's life will take place at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, February 23 with Tom Davis officiating. Pallbearers are Mark Pernitsky, Dustin Pernitsky, David Hodgson, Kathleen Hodgson, Matthew Hodgson, and Joshua Hodgson. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Children's Wish Foundation, 350 St. Mary Ave, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 3J2 or The Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2L 1X3.
