GLADYS DOREEN MORKEN (nee PAULSON) Aged 76, died peacefully at The Emerson Personal Care Home on Friday, February 23, 2007 at 12:25 a.m. Gladys was born December 12, 1930 in Piney, MB to the late Delia (Dolly) and Wilfred Paulson. She attended Piney School and on November 20, 1951 was united in marriage to Melvin Morken her childhood sweetheart. Gladys and Melvin began their married life in Piney where they began their family. In 1957 they moved to Dominion City but always maintained close ties to Piney. Gladys had a busy family life, her doughnuts and bread will never be surpassed, she was a very dedicated 4-H Leader for many years, loved to snowmobile, hunt, fish, garden or anything else that would give her the opportunity to be outside. The hotter the weather the happier she was. When her girls grew up Gladys joined the work force. She started work at the sewing factory in Emerson then in St. Jean and also cleaned the CIBC bank after work. She developed carpal tunnel syndrome, which was unheard of at the time that required her to change jobs. She started work in the Emerson Personal Care Home Hospital where she found her true vocation and happily worked there until her retirement. Retirement gave Melvin and Gladys the opportunity to do the things they enjoyed most. Camping, traveling, fishing, playing cards, dancing and enjoying their many friends and relatives. Her home was always open to new and old acquaintances alike. Gladys is survived by her husband Melvin; her daughters and their husbands, Virginia and Dennis Weiss and Brenda and David Sims: four grandchildren, Reishan Weiss, Curtis Weiss, Tyson Stevens, Joshua Anderson; great-grandson Jaeger Weiss; two sisters Lovina (Gilmore) Torkelson and Darlene (Richard) Culleton. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services for Gladys Morken will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 28th at Dominion City United Church. Pastor Laurel Seyfert will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Emerson Personal Care Home, Dominion City Swimming Pool or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10 - 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. We would like to thank all of the staff of the Emerson Personal Care Home for their loving help and support. VITA FUNERAL HOMES VITA CHAPEL IN CARE OF ARRANGEMENTS.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I'm so sorry that I've been out of touch with my Thompson relatives for so many years. It doesn't seem that long ago, but it's been over 30 years since my last visit with Gladys. Of course, I was back to Piney when my dad, Ted Thompson, died in 2001, but my life has taken quite a tumble since then. I'd love to re-connect with my living relatives, especially my first and second cousins, so please write/email me if you're interested... My cousin, Darlene, on my mother's side of my family, and I are planning a trip to meet some of our first cousins and their families for the first time, in BC in May of this year. I'd love to hear from Darlene Culleton, Gladys' sister, who's close to my age. We really hit it off when my daughter, Stacey, and I visited in the 1980's... Again, please accept my condolences on the passing of Gladys. Sincerely, Sheron Edgson (née Thompson) - Posted by: Sheron Edgson (First cousin) on: Jan 27, 2017
