ANDREW JOHN DAWSON Early in the morning on March 1, 2007, Andy ended his brief but fierce battle with cancer. At his side was Marjorie (nee Hiebert), his wife of 31 years, son Sean (Shannon), daughter Anne (Ian) and sister-in-law Eileen. We were all amazed by his rally of strength as he waited for Sean to arrive from Vancouver to say goodbye. In his journey over the past nine months, he was so overwhelmed by the support and love of such a huge network of friends and family. His positive spirit and open heart will be missed by many, particularly older siblings, Ken (Connie) and Mary (Joe), mother-in-law Anne Hiebert, in-laws, Len (Rose) and Eileen (Ken) and cherished nieces and nephews, Hal, Steve (Lisa), Mike (Debbie), Kathie, Ralph, Chris, Eric and Lisa; numerous great-nieces and nephews and several treasured godchildren. His first grandchildren, twin girls, are due to Sean and Shannon in March. Born in England on January 13, 1944, Andy grew up in Charleswood. He was an active member of the Anglican Young People's Group where he made several lifelong friends. In 1965, he joined the Winnipeg Canoe Club at the time a bustling social club which ventured out into the bush every weekend. His love of paddling never dwindled, and he thrived on organizing the Annual Thanksgiving Feast in the Forest canoe trip. He had already begun preparations for this year's event the event's 40th anniversary. Andy was bitten by the travel bug at a young age, hitchhiking Europe at 19 and Asia four years later. He often went on vacation with as many as ten family members! We will cherish memories of Barbados, Hawaii, Belize and Cuba, as well as smaller family travels to France, England, Ireland, Switzerland and most recently, Germany. A celebration of Andy's life will be held on Monday, March 5, 11:00 a.m. at St Luke's Anglican Church (130 Nassau) with reception to follow. Arrangements by Thomson Funeral Home, 783-7211. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba. And as Andy would most likely say to you all Daaayoooh!

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Came across his somewhat hidden plaque at an amazing lake in Ontario few days ago. What a great tribute. Well picked location as well, one of the best campsites to be found. Reading his obituary I noticed so many similarities to my youthful Europe backpacking trips and love of canoeing. Sounds like an amazing man who died much too young. Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Peter (Fellow paddler ) on: Jul 15, 2020
