STELLA (STEPHANIE) PLISZKA Peacefully in her sleep, on Wednesday, February 28, 2007, at the West Park Manor, Winnipeg, Stella Stephanie Pliszka, of Winnipeg, formerly of Portage la Prairie, beloved widow of the late Tony Pliszka, passed away at the age of 94 years. Funeral service will be held in the chapel of the Omega Funeral Home, Portage la Prairie, on Monday, March 5, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. with the Reverend Father Michael Skrumeda officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Mom was born in Portage la Prairie on August 13, 1912, daughter of William and Nellie Rumanyk. She was raised on the family farm in the Hoop and Holler district where she attended many dances. She worked in Winnipeg and Portage before marrying Tony Pliszka in June of 1939. In 1950 they moved to Oakville and returned to Portage in 1963. She moved to Winnipeg in 1996 and in August of 2006 she moved to in the West Park Manor where she resided until her passing. Mom was a hard worker and always had a smile on her face. She was the best Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma always putting her family first. She enjoyed nature very much and always had pets. She loved gardening and nurturing her plants and flowers. Mom's hands were busy hands and when she wasn't cooking, cleaning or gardening she was knitting or crocheting. (Many pieces of her work won many prizes at the local fair.) Friends and staff at the Metropolitan Kiwanis in Winnipeg where Mom spent her latter 10 years knew her well for growing tomatoes every year and for perennials she brought to them from her home in Portage. Mom was always happy to share her harvest with anyone who dropped by. There are many who will remember her wonderful cooking and baking, especially her perogies, cabbage rolls and borsht. Mom was very dedicated to her Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church and to the Women's League of her church which catered to many weddings and funerals over the years. Mom was honoured at the church in 2005 for her dedication and being the oldest living member of her congregation at that time. In her younger years in Portage she loved to bowl and did so for many years, and spent much time with her husband Tony at the horse races. Mom entertained herself in the latter years watching sports on TV, especially curling and golf and she also enjoyed bingo, cribbage. Predeceased by her parents; husband Tony; son-in-law Emil; two brothers, Bill and Stan; brothers-in-law, Nick, Charles and Walter; sisters-in-law, Mary and Rose. She leaves to mourn her passing, son Anthony (Meri) of Toronto; daughter Marlene Kovacs of Winnipeg; five grandchildren, Richard (Kim), Gerry (Marnie), Jo Anne, Jason (Josette), Sarah (Mike); 10 great-grandchildren, Anna, Curtis, Mitchell, Julianne, Samantha, Jessica, Jacob, Shane, Adam and Emily. Also surviving is her brother Al (Carole) Romanyk; sisters-in-law, Jean Romanyk, Vivian Pliszka and Tina Pauch; and several nieces and nephews. Should friends so desire donations may be made to the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church in Portage or to a charity of your choice. Friends may leave a message of sympathy on our web site www.omegafuneralhome.com Dedicated to those we serve. Mom We will always remember the way you looked, The way you talked and smiled, The things you did for us, Are with us all the while, You never failed to do your best, Your heart was true and tender, You lived your life for those you loved And those you loved remember. Love Marlene
