ZDENKA MECHTLER (nee KAMBOVA) 1919 - 2007 Zdenka Mechtler passed away peacefully on March 3 at St. Joseph's Residence in Winnipeg at the age of 87. Zdenka was born in Skalica, Slovakia, on November 18, 1919. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1981. After spending four years in an Austrian refugee camp, she and John immigrated to Canada, arriving in Halifax by ship in November 1948. Soon after their arrival, they were employed by the late Donald H. Bain at his farm in Grosse Isle, Manitoba, John as a farm manager and Zdenka as a housekeeper. After 18 years on the farm, they moved to their home on Coralberry Avenue in Winnipeg where they spent many wonderful years together. After John passed away, Zdenka became a volunteer at the Health Sciences Centre and received several awards for her 20 years of service. Zdenka was a very thoughtful, kind and friendly person who will be lovingly remembered by her goddaughter Mary Ann Doucette and family of Ottawa, and by her very close friends Tony and Susan Hacko and family of Winnipeg, John and Melvyne Schurko and family of Winnipeg, and Adeline Wlasichuk of Winnipeg. Thanks to the many individuals at St. Joseph's Residence who made Zdenka's life comfortable during her three years at the Residence, with special thanks to nurses Heather, Leanne and Helen, and good friends and companions Eva, Susan and Spiritual Care Normand, for their support and compassion during the last few months and especially during the last few weeks. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 9 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 250 Burrin Avenue, Winnipeg. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations in Zdenka's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or to St. Joseph's Residence, 1149 Leila Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R2P 1S6.
