MARGARET C. MARTIN August 21, 1910 - March 5, 2007 Peacefully, at her residence on March 5, 2007, Margaret Martin passed away at the age of 96 years. Margaret is survived by her niece Margaret Yeo of Salem, Oregon; great-niece Nancy Menges; and great-nephews, Jim Kelsey, Martin Kelsey and Richard Kelsey. She will be greatly missed by her adopted Martin families of Jim Martin (Barbara), Don Martin (Karen) and Cathy Quiring/Martin (Jacob); and her adopted Ennis family of Dave, Melita, John and Janine Ennis and her family. Margaret was born in Oxford, Wisconsin, the daughter of Samuel and Nettie Martin. Her father was a Presbyterian Minister and she had two brothers and one sister. The family moved to Manitoba when Margaret was 10 months old. She attended Wesley College (which is now the University of Winnipeg) and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education during the Great Depression. Margaret met Grace Martin at Wesley College in 1933 and they became lifelong friends. At Christmas in 1934 Margaret came down with diphtheria, but she was one of the lucky ones who survived. After graduation she taught in various Manitoba schools, subsequently moving back to Winnipeg to teach French and Business at West Kildonan School. She and Grace lived with Margaret's mother in those early years. Grace and Margaret became great friends; both eventually taught at Gordon Bell School (Margaret taught French and Typing), and for close to 40 years shared a house on Dowker Avenue where they made many friends. Margaret was active in many activities including curling, bowling, golf and bridge. In 1960 a curling team of Margaret, Grace, Chris Dunning and May Baldwin won the Lady Eaton Trophy, which was the main event of the lady's bonspiel in Winnipeg. A lifelong traveler, she and Grace traveled extensively after retirement from Gordon Bell School in 1971 and their travels (often with various friends) included the Orient, Australia, Europe, Mexico, Alaska, Jamaica, various cruises, and their personal favourite place, Hawaii. With an active social life and a wide group of friends, Margaret led a full life. She was a respected educator and an avid reader. After Grace became ill and required personal care, Margaret moved to the Waverley where she made new friends and joined old friends who moved there as well. She enjoyed her apartment and life at the Waverley, being able to remain active there and to live independently until her death. As her health became more fragile these last few years, Dr. Sheldon Permack attended her with great attention, and the family would like to thank him for his sincere and professional care. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 9, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in memory of Margaret to a charity of individual choice. Thomson Funeral Home 669 Broadway - 783-7211
