BEATRICE SHORT (née RUSEN) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Beattie, as she was always known, passed away at the Simkin Center on February 20, 2007 after a lengthy illness. She was 86 years old. She will be dearly missed by her loving children, Arthur, Roberta, and David Short; and grandchildren, Alissa Bookbinder, Hadera and Jeremy Short. She was predeceased by her parents, Eva and Louis Rusen, and her loving husband of 46 years, Harvey. Beattie was born in Winnipeg in 1920. She grew up in the north end and graduated from St. John's High School. Not long after, she graduated with a nursing degree from Chicago, IL, where she became Head Nurse at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Her home and her heart was still in Winnipeg and she soon moved back and married her eventual lifelong partner, Harvey. Beattie assisted her husband in his early years of practicing dentistry, in and around Winnipeg, before he eventually settled on Main Street in this city where he worked for a quarter of a century. It wasn't long before their first child, Arthur, was born. Two more children later and the family was complete. This very strong but gentle woman was at her best as a homemaker. This truly was her calling. She loved her family deeply, and they loved and respected her just as much. As parents, Beattie and her loving Harvey were wonderful role models for their children. Many people regarded them both as close friends. Among her lifelong interests, playing piano while singing was always her favourite. She had many years of piano study, and her voice was very operatic. Traditional Jewish life, including Friday night dinners with family was very important to her. She loved cooking and baking for family and charities, of which Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood and Hadassh-Wizo were a lifelong source of pride and commitment. Family and friends were always the most important aspect of life to Beattie. Material wealth didn't matter to her. Her children and their friends loved to be around for her kindness and easy-going nature. In her latter years, after the tragic passing of her husband, her three grandchildren became a wonderful source of joy for her, and her children loved watching these special moments. She was a compassionate lady, admired by everyone she touched. Funeral services were held at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue on Friday, February 23, 2007. Pallbearers were Ken Atnikov, Harry Schwartz, Dr. Leonard Schwartz, Bob Walker, Dr. David Wiseman, and Norman Yusim. We will always be grateful for the compassionate care she received from the staff at the Simkin Centre. Donations can kindly be made to a charity of your choice.
