He was predeceased by his wife Betty; parents, Jon and Emrisjana; brothers, Mike and Chris; and sisters, Bentina, Eileen, and Theda. Axel was born on November 30, 1914 in Selkirk, MB. He was the youngest in his family. Axel's early working years were involved in commercial fishing on both Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba. Both he and his brother Jens changed professions to work as painters and decorators at Daerwood Decorating. In the last ten of his working years, he was a painter at the Selkirk Mental Hospital. Axel served in the Second World War as a radio operator in a tank. He met his wife Betty during the war. She left her native Scotland to marry Axel on July 5, 1947. They settled in Selkirk where they raised their two children. Axel was an active volunteer in the community with the Association for Community Living of which he was a Life Member. He was also a 49-year member with the Royal Canadian Legion. In 1979 Axel suffered a stroke, which restricted his physical abilities, but he managed to adjust and still was able to look after his yard and house. In 1996 Axel suffered another stroke, which resulted in him moving into Red River Place in January 1997. Most important to Axel was his family, which he remained involved with to the very end.
