            VERLA MAVIS MAGUIRE (COTTON) Peacefully, Mavis passed away at the Beausejour General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Mavis was predeceased by her mother Margaret in 1941, her father Almon in 1986, step-mother Edythe in 1987, daughter Lynnann in 1990, brother William (Bill) and wife Joyce in 2002, and her sister Phyllis in 1998 and husband Alexander in 1984. Mavis is survived by her husband Cliff; sons, Blair (Karen) of St. Albert, AB and Kevin of Lac du Bonnet; grandchildren, Duncan and Shannon of St. Albert, Miranda, Morgan, and Dallas of Lac du Bonnet; sister Louise Cotton of Swan River, brother Mervyn Cotton (Kay) of Nepean, ON; brother Jack Coulthart (Marjorie) of Swan River; sisters, Maude Snow (Ian) of Barrie, ON, Sandra Drysdale of Winnipeg, and Violet Van Landeghem (John) of St. Albert, AB; and special friends Kim and Leona Kettles and their children, Dennis (Angela) and Lily, Kyle (Tasha), and Adam. Mavis was born on November 9, 1937 and grew up in Swan River. She taught school in Inglis before moving to Winnipeg where she met Clifford while working at Manitoba Hydro. They were married on January 24, 1959 and made Lac du Bonnet their home. Mavis worked with the church and various organizations while their children were growing up. Her claim to fame was making custom birthday cakes for her grandchildren. She worked at various jobs in Lac du Bonnet, retiring from the RM of Lac du Bonnet in 1986. Cliff retired in 1986 and in 1988 they took their dream vacation - a two month trip to New Zealand and Australia. Mavis joined the Order of the Eastern Star in 1971, became very involved, and served Pine Falls Chapter #56 on three occasions as Worthy Matron. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the doctors and staff at CancerCare, NEHA Home Care and Beausejour Hospital, especially Dr. D. Schmidt. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Russell Funeral Home, Beausejour. Donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to CancerCare Manitoba.
