SARAH JANE (JEAN) HUNTER (nee HOPKINS) Sarah Jane (Jean) Hunter (nee Hopkins) a long time resident of Green Ridge, Manitoba passed away peacefully at the Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home in Winnipeg on March 13, 2007, at the age of 102 years. Jean was born on February 10, 1905 at St. Elisabeth, Manitoba where her parents, Thomas K. and Mary Esther (Gainer) Hopkins had a homestead. Jean received her education at Carlowrie School and Morris High School. After graduation from Manitoba Normal School in Winnipeg, in 1925, Jean taught school for nine and a half years, and then married Clark on December 29, 1934. Jean returned to teaching in 1959, and taught for nine years in Vita, Woodmore, Green Ridge, and Ridgeville schools. Clark and Jean moved to Winnipeg in the fall of 1972. Clark and Jean were active in community affairs, taking part in community plays of the era, and both were members of the Independent Order of Foresters. Jean was a charter member of the Green Ridge Women's Institute, an active member of the Green Ridge United Church Women's Auxiliary, and a past Worth Matron of Dominion City Chapter of the Eastern Star. She leaves to mourn her passing, two sons; Clifford (Irene) of Green Ridge who is on the family farm, and James (Ruby) of Regina; one daughter Peggy Nako of Winnipeg; seven grandchildren, Laura Steen (Ralph) Schofield, David (Billie) Hunter and Sharon (Tom) Chubaty, and Scott (Amy), Heather (Jeff), Kenneth (Tammy), and Robert (Sara) Hunter, 11 great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn her passing is one brother, William of Winnipeg, sister-in-law Lorraine of Morris; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jean was predeceased by her husband Clark, three sisters, Margaret (Leslie) Stevenson, Eva (Sid) Vesey and Emily (Wally) Wilson, brother Jim, and sister-in-law Isla. A memorial service will be held at Green Ridge United Church on Saturday, March 17, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Bev Ward officiating. Her ashes will be interred in the Green Ridge Cemetery at a later date. Jean will be sadly missed by her family, friends, and neighbours.
