PETER HABILUK June 2, 1923 - March 13, 2007 It is with extreme sadness that the family announces the passing of their father and grandfather, Peter Habiluk on March 13, 2007, at Fred Douglas Lodge. Peter leaves behind to mourn his passing his son Patrick Habiluk (grandchildren Jesse and Sari); daughter Carole Rickey (grandchildren Jason and Allison); daughter Judy Allum and son-in-law Brad (grandchildren Christopher and Kelly). He is also survived by his sister Helen Matrician. Peter was predeceased by his beloved wife Kathleen (Kay) in August, 1987; his grandson Corey Habiluk in December, 1985; his parents Harry and Mary Habiluk; and brother Mike Habiluk. Peter was born and educated in Winnipeg and married Kay De Vuono in February, 1943. They were together for 44 years until Mom's untimely passing in 1987. They raised their family in Winnipeg and, shortly after Dad retired at age 55 from Winnipeg Hydro where he was employed as an operating engineer for over 30 years, they pulled up stakes and moved to Chilliwack, BC, in 1979. Dad and Mom spent seven years in Chilliwack enjoying their home, garden and the mountains until Mom became ill and they moved back to Winnipeg in 1986 to be near family. Dad was fortunate enough to travel several times to Hawaii, once with Mom for their 30th anniversary, as well as San Francisco, Reno and Mexico. In 1995 Dad travelled to Holland for the 50th Anniversary of their Liberation and was able to visit his brother's grave, Pilot Officer Mike Habiluk, who was killed in action during the Second World War - something he had always wanted to do. Prior to his retirement, many happy years were spent at the farm on the Whitemouth River in Elma, MB, where Dad and Mom built a little getaway to relax, plant their huge garden, swim and entertain family and friends. Dad was an animal lover, especially dogs and horses, and he always fancied himself as a bit of a cowboy . His dream was to own a ranch someday, which he somewhat accomplished when he and Mom bought property in Elma, except the only horse to be found belonged to a neighbour - but he did have his much loved dog, Koko, for 16 years. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to all the exceptional staff at Fred Douglas Lodge where Dad had lived and been lovingly cared for since June 1999. We especially want to thank the nursing staff - Rilda who developed a special relationship with Pete and always knew what to say and do to keep him happy; Alex and Jennifer, we appreciate your reassurance and kindness as Dad made his final journey; and to Joyce McLean, resident volunteer, who helped feed Dad and also provided care and comfort. Your support will never be forgotten. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Peter's memory to Fred Douglas Lodge, 1275 Burrows Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R2X 0B8 or to The Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent Road, Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3.
