WALTER DOUGLAS BATES September 21, 1917 - March 13, 2007 Walter Douglas Bates passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital on March 13, 2007 at the age of 89 years. Walter was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a young man he was an avid swimmer and canoeist with the Winnipeg Canoe Club. In 1939, he joined the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and was stationed in London during the Second World War, and transferred to the signal corps. It was there he met his wife Enid May Lock at a dance. They were married and had their first born, Keith. After the war Doug returned home with his regiment, Enid and Keith followed 6-months later. They resided in West Kildonan where Doug worked at the Canadian Weather Office as the Teletype Operator. They had their second child; Pam. Doug enjoyed his family and friends, golfing, bowling and playing cards. Doug was a volunteer for the school and was elected to West Kildonan School Board. After retirement Doug became involved with establishing (he is a founding member) of the McBeth House. He and Enid camped all over Canada, and for the past nine years, spent time in Victoria, BC every winter. They also have great memories from their trips to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Doug also was a Rawleigh dealer. As he grew older he turned to playing cards, television and music for entertainment. After Enid's passing Doug moved to the Fred Douglas Heritage House. Doug is survived by his son Keith (Susan) Bates of Stoney Creek, ON, daughter Pamela (Richard) Norberg of Brandon, MB, grandchildren, Lori Bates, Steven Delsey (Tracy) of Hamilton, Kristie (Chris) Jones of Brandon, MB, Erika Norberg and fiancé (Kevin Graham) Medicine Hat, AB, great-grandchildren, Jesse, Brown, Kaitlyn Benning, Deavon and Coral Anne Delsey, sister Kathleen White of Winnipeg, sisters-in-law, Muriel Popplewell Buckinghamshire, England, Pam (Eddie) Copeland Claresholm, AB, Jill (Jerry) Cottrill Derbyshire, England, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his loving wife and soul mate Enid on October 11, 2006, his mother-in-law Florence Lock, his parents, Ruth and Walter Bates and brother-in-law Dave White. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Boniface Foundation or to a charity of your choice. Memorial service will be held on March 24, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home.
