ERNEST SCHARIEN Passed away at Portage Hospital on March 17, with family at his side. Ernie was born in Carman on September 26, 1919 and moved to the Ingleside district at the age of four. He received his education at Ingleside country school and took his high school education by correspondence. Ernie joined the Air Force in 1941 and served as an aero engine mechanic in several bases in Manitoba and Ontario. He spoke often of his trip to New York and had many fond memories to share. Ernie married Hazel Miller on October 23, 1948. They settled on their farm in the Wingham District, where they resided for 55 years. Ernie and Hazel reluctantly moved to Portage in 2002, due to health concerns. Ernie was an avid hunter, curler, and woodworker. Left to mourn are his wife of 58 years Hazel; their six children and their families; Gerry Scharien- Jason (Bridget), Justin (Erin), Jessica: Jan Rafnkelsson (Eric) - Becky (Russ); Amy (Clint), Abby, Ty: Laverne Teasdale (Jerry) - Julie (Brian), Brogan; Kevin (Kris); Jodie (Jeremy): Lois Gould (Blaine) - Joanne (B. J.), Jayci Jo; Jennifer (Don), Wade; Michael (Chelsey): Al Scharien (Lou) - Jeff, Todd: Steve Scharien (Laurel) - Matthew, Dana. Ernie is survived by his sisters, Jean Fear, Mary Lang and Margaret Koppen. He is also survived by Hazel's siblings; Jim (Marion) Miller, Tom Miller, Wilma (Vic) Furniss, and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by friends and neighbours. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. from the Elm Creek United Church, with Rev. Harold Kenyon officiating. Interment will take place in Elm Creek Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are, Reg and Ollie Butler, Max and Winnie Laing, Anna Tibbett, and Elva Savage. Pallbearers are, Bob Morisseau, Jack Ryrie, Bryan McIntyre, Jerry Butler, Charlie Scharien, Bob Laing and Dean Simonson. Donations in Ernie's Memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Portage General Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Doyle's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. www.doyleschapels.com.
