DOROTHEA GILROY MILLER (WRIGHT) Surrounded by family, Mom died peacefully on March 20, 2007. She was predeceased by her husband Wilbur (Bill) in 1980; and by her only son David in 2005. Her daughters, Betty (Reg) Pell, Linda (Barry) McFadyen and Ruby (Peter) Zacharias; her grandchildren, Heather, David, Greg, Ross, Bryan, Steven, Jill, Trevor and Sheila; and her great-grandchildren, Chris, Alexandra, Riley and Angus will miss her terribly. Dorothea was born in Dundee, Scotland, on March 4, 1918, and came to Canada at the age of 4. She spent most of her childhood in Winnipeg before marrying Bill and moving to Fort William (now Thunder Bay). She brought Betty and David back to Winnipeg when Bill went overseas for the Second World War. Dorothea spent the rest of her life in Winnipeg and over the years was involved in many volunteer organizations and was well known in the community for her leadership qualities. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the federal public service. For Mom, family meant everything. She had the remarkable ability to make each and every one of her grandchildren feel as though he or she were the most important person in her world. In return, each of them adored her. She spent the last four years living at Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts, where she soon endeared herself to staff and residents alike. We will be forever grateful to Heather and her staff at Kiwanis Courts for always going the extra mile for our Mom. Despite many adversities over the years, her indomitable spirit and sense of humour always shone through. She was independent to the end, even as her body began to fail her. Her determination to overcome the limitations of increasing blindness and frailty was an example to all of us. She touched the lives of many people and will be missed by all that knew her. A memorial service celebrating Dorothea's life will be held on Friday, March 23 at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street, at 1:00 p.m. Flowers gratefully declined. Those who wish to honour her memory may make donations in her name to Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts, 2300 Ness Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3J 2A2.
