Date of Passing: Mar 17, 2007
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVERNA BROWN (nee MURRELL) Suddenly, in the evening of March 17, 2007, Verna passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 81. She was predeceased by her husband Gordon Montgomery Brown; and her parents, Phillip and Louise Sarah Murrell (nee Hutchinson). Her memory will be forever cherished by her daughter Karen Brown (Tom); sister Phyllis and brother Buff (Jean); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Mom was born and raised on a farm in Stonewall. In her early years she worked at the health clinic in Stonewall. She moved to Winnipeg in the 1950s to pursue nursing, where she met her future husband Gordon. After a lengthy courtship they were married and together they shared 25 years before his untimely passing in 1986. Verna was a lifetime member of the Rebekah's and was very proud to receive her 50-year pin. Mom held several different positions within the Rebekah's and thoroughly enjoyed each one, most recently the sick and visiting committee. Mom enjoyed her weekly visits to travel log, and her season tickets to MTC which she enjoyed attending with her daughter in later years. Tending her flower and vegetable gardens on Dominion Street for 33 years was a favourite pastime until moving to the Rebekah / Odd Fellows-owned Assiniboine Links where she has resided for the past six years. Mom's beautiful smile will always be missed. It is easy enough to be pleasant when life flows like a song; But the man worth while is the one who can smile when everything goes dead wrong. You will find as you look back upon your life, that the moments that stand out, The moments when you have really lived, are the moments when you have done things in a spirit of love. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2007, at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, with Wendy Rankin officiating, and an interment and reception will follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Suite 200-6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6, or to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent Street, Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3. Verna, a cousin of Mom's (Norah Quinton, nee Coulter) often telephoned to ask how Dad (in his 96th year) and I were keeping. Her calls were always timely, thoughtful, and a breath of fresh air. We had hoped to meet and share a meal; unfortunately, we were never able to work out a mutually good time. I'm sorry we didn't get to meet in person, however your mom brightened our time with her caring calls during Dad's final days. I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom was a very lovely, caring lady.
