MARLENE PATRICIA HICKSON (nee FRENCH) January 25, 1951 - March 22, 2007 Marlene passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Thursday, March 22 with her family by her side at Pinawa Hospital, Pinawa, MB. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Walter of 34 years and son Dennis. Marlene was predeceased by her parents, Bernard and Ena French; her in-laws, Hedley and Ruth Hickson; and brother-in-law Chuck McEwan. She is also survived by her aunt Charlotte McInnis of Coaldale, AB; sister-in-law Edith McEwan, Barrhead, AB; her nephews and their families and numerous cousins. Marlene was born in Dryden, ON and as a small child moved to Rennie, MB where she grew up attending school in Rennie and Whitemouth, MB. As a small child, Marlene was nicknamed Butchy by a close family friend and she was known to most by that name all her life. As a teenager, she worked for Natural Resources in the fire tower. After meeting her husband Walter, they married and moved to Winnipeg. She was a stay-at-home mom until Dennis started school, it was then that she started to work daily as a lunch monitor at Prince Edward School and even though Dennis moved onto another school, Marlene held her position there for 11 years. She often enjoyed going on the trapline in the Whiteshell with her dad on weekends and after his passing continued this hobby with her husband and son. After Walter's retirement in 2003, they returned to Rennie to enjoy all that the country had to offer. She lead a quiet life, enjoying gardening in the summer, and doing word search puzzles and watching cooking shows during the winter months. She loved to watch the deer at the bird feeder, and enjoyed quading and snowmobiling with family and friends. Marlene loved all animals, and she will be missed by all her pets. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the Doctors and Nurses of the Pinawa Hospital for the care and compassion extended to Marlene and our family. A memorial service for Marlene will be held on Wednesday, March 28 at 2:00 p.m. in The Brokenhead Room at the Brokenhead Recreation Centre in Beausejour, MB. A burial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
