MARY KATHLEEN RUANE Mary Kathleen Ruane passed away on March 25, 2007, born March 2, 1906, in England. Predeceased by her parents Patrick and Bridget Ruane; and two sisters, Nora and Winifred. Kay came to Canada with her family and settled in Woodlands, Manitoba. She received her early education in Manitoba. In 1928, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Misericordia School of Nursing in Winnipeg. Later she was among the first class to enter at the new school of nursing established at the University of Manitoba in 1944. After 10 years as Director of Nursing at Children's Hospital in Winnipeg, Kay was then appointed as the first Director of Nursing at the New University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK. In 1960 Kay was chosen by the Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan, U.S.A., to organize and direct a program for a Nursing Unit Administration course designed for Head Nurses in all Canadian hospitals and held this position until the end of her nursing career in 1969. Kay was an active member of the Canadian Nurses Ass'n. and a vice-president of the Manitoba Association of Registered Nurses. She was a longtime member of the Canadian Business and Professional Women's Club in Manitoba, serving as vice-president from 1971 to 1973. Following retirement to Victoria in 1974, she worked as a volunteer for the Auxiliary of the Old Victoria General Hospital. She also volunteered at the James Bay New Horizons. Kay's pioneering spirit lead her into new areas of nursing: a profession she found deeply rewarding. Along the way she made many cherished friendships - some made in her training days would last her lifetime. Funeral rites will be held at St. Andrews Cathedral on Thursday, March 29, 2007, at 12:10 p.m. with Monsignor M. O'Connell officiating. Burial will take place in the family plot in St. Mary's Cemetery in Winnipeg. Condolences may be sent to: www.firstmemorialfuneral.com
