FREDERICK LOUGH Born at Ellingham, Northumberland, England, on May 31, 1908, the fourth child of John William Lough and Ethel Elizabeth Fail, died at Grace Hospital I.C.U. Winnipeg, March 25, 2007. Predeceased by his beloved wife Clare Winnifred (nee Carthy) on September 14, 1992, to whom he was married 52 years. He leaves to mourn his loss, son John Frederick, foster son George Laquerre, relatives in England and Florida, as well as Clare's family in Winnipeg and Vancouver to whom he was a Dear Uncle Fred. His spiritual family at St. Ann's Catholic Church in St. James was also very special to him. After graduating from The Duke of Northumberland's School, Alnwick, Fred immigrated to Canada in the summer of 1928, going first to farm in Saskatchewan and later moving to Winnipeg where he served on the lay staff of Saint Paul's College, 432 Ellice Ave., from 1932 to 1939. On the outbreak of the Second World War, he joined Winnipeg's local Scottish Regiment, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, often pointing out that although he had retained his Northumbrian Scottish-sounding burr, he was English and always would be. Fred saw action at the famous Dieppe Raid of August 19, 1942, and was taken prisoner of war in Silesia and Pomerania, Germany, from 1942 to 1945. After discharge from the military service, he worked locally for Canadian National Railways, both at the Telegraph Building, Portage and Main, and for the Baggage Dept., Union Station, from 1946 to 1973. He was proud to be a member of the CBRT and GW Trade Union and was a longtime supporter of the Manitoba NDP. Fred's deep Christian faith permeated everything he did and was especially evident in the way he cared for Clare at home during the long years of her major illnesses. Fidelity to church, family and community were all of a piece to this devoted husband and father. Well done good and faithful servant; enter now the joy of the Lord. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, 2007, at the St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, 271 Hampton St. in St. James. Reverend Fr. Sean Cahill will celebrate the mass. Cremation has taken place. A private inurnment of Frederick's cremated remains will take place in the Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, Waverley Street, at a later date. Donations in Frederick's memory to Development and Peace, in care of St. Ann's Parish, 271 Hampton St., Winnipeg, MB R3J 1P5, would be appreciated. REQUIESCAT IN PACE. ON HIS SOUL DEAR JESUS, HAVE MERCY LECLAIRE BROTHERS in care of arrangements. 775-2220
