MIKE SCIBAK 1919 - 2007 After a lengthy illness, Mike Scibak passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at the Maples Personal Care Home. He leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Gary (Martha) of London, ON, Grant (Wendy) of Dauphin, MB, Brad (Kim) of Minneapolis, MN, Brian (Shirley) Spottar and daughter Marlene (Stan) Sebastyanko of Winnipeg and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother John (Lucille) of Simcoe, ON, and his good friend Patti of London, ON. He was predeceased by his wife Mary in 1991; his parents, Steve and Pearl and his sister Anne Barabash. Mike was born on April 8, 1919, in Beausejour, MB. Life was difficult in his younger years and in order to survive he road the rails in search of a job. He settled in the north end of Winnipeg as a young man and made many friends who affectionately nicknamed him Blackie. He worked at several jobs driving taxi, building homes, selling liquid fertilizer and in 1947 found employment with the Canadian Pacific Railway as a Switchman. He retired from the CPR at the age of 63. Aside from his regular job, Mike was a very talented handyman who was able to repair cars, television sets and smaller appliances. Mike and Mary enjoyed travelling to the U.S.A. especially his favourite places like Chicago and the dice tables in Las Vegas. Picking mushrooms and attending the weekly auctions at Wachniaks were his other favourites. He had a passion for animals, especially his dogs Queenie, Tony and Bambi. They gave him many years of comfort and happiness. Mike had a great love for his family who were very important to him. He enjoyed family outings at his cottage in Matlock, MB, for many years but most important were Christmas and holiday festivities at his home on Polson Avenue. There never was a shortage of food and drink for the family and friends who dropped over. These were great times! In accordance with his wishes, his body has been donated to the University of Manitoba Anatomy Department. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike's memory to the charity of their choice. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Maples Personal Care Home as well as the Seven Oaks Hospital for their dedication and loving care of our father over the past two years. Rest in peace Dad, we love you and we will all miss you.
