ADRIAAN PETER GEERTS It is with profound sorrow that the family announces the passing our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend Adriaan Geerts after a courageous battle with cancer. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 51 years, Roelie; their five children, Margaret (Dave), Tini (Bill), Willem (Elaine), John (Katie), Sophie; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister Riet Drent of the Netherlands, sisters-in-law, Detty Arends (Johann) and Anne Hielkema, extended family and many friends. Adriaan was predeceased by his parents Willem and Tryntje Geerts; his brothers, Bram and Tony Geerts; his sister Fook Adriaansen; and his brother-in-law Jerry Hielkema. Adriaan was born in Klundert (NB), Netherlands and served in the Dutch Navy prior to coming to Canada in 1954. He met Roelie shortly after moving to Winnipeg where they married and eventually settled in West St. Paul to raise their family. He worked at first for Winnipeg Supply, hauling bags of coal and later became employed with the city of Winnipeg and Manitoba Department of Highways, from which he retired in 1993. Adriaan was a hard worker and always enjoyed life to the fullest. He spent a lot of his spare time restoring relic cars, enjoying the outdoors, and reading war history novels. He loved wildlife, long drives in the country, and chopping and splitting firewood. He was an active member of the German Society of Winnipeg and enjoyed many social gatherings held there. Adriaan was an honest and virtuous man who held a strong belief in God. He will be missed immensely. The family extends their gratitude towards the medical staff at Seven Oaks Hospital, and also to friends and family for their support and care during this difficult time. Funeral service will be on Thursday, April 5, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main St., with interment in Clarkleigh, Manitoba. FRIENDS FUNERAL SERVICE 2146 Main Street 339-5555
