SAM MASLOWSKY On March 30, 2007, after a brief illness and strong fight, Sam Maslowsky passed away at Seven Oaks Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Evelyn; sons, Kenny and Jerry (Chris); daughter Debbie (Arthur); brother Bill (Zeke); brother-in-law Nathan Yacowar (Lucy); grandchildren, Kaylee, Bobby, Tara and Sarah; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was predeceased by his daughter Barbara, his sister Betty Meyers, and his parents, Alexander Zeiskind and Shaindel. Sam was born in Pavlitch, Russia in 1923. He immigrated to Winnipeg with his parents in 1927. He attended Dufferin School, Hugh John McDonald and Daniel McIntyre where he participated in many of the musicals. He also worked with his father in their family grocery store, The Cozy Inn. Sam was in the Armed Forces, stationed in Bournemouth, England from 1943 to 1946. Although he rarely spoke of his experiences overseas, while in hospital, he shared that he was a pilot during the war. He said he was often told Maslowsky, pile-it here. Maslowsky, pile-it there. His incredible sense of humour and timing were ever present. Sam continued the family tradition of storekeeping for close to 40 years with his own grocery stores - Cut-Rate Grocery in Weston and later Tweed Food Centre in Elmwood. Everyone knew and loved Sam and Evelyn in their neighbourhood stores. After selling the Elmwood store, Sam worked for friends in their stores and his last job before retirement was at Holiday Foods with his dear friends Harry and Arlene Minuk. Sam loved his children and grandchildren more than anything. They were truly his pride and joy. He loved watching them perform, hit a puck, or just being with them and talking and laughing. He loved his community, the Shaarey Zedek Leisure Programs and the Gwen Sector Creative Living Centre activities. Sam was a true mensch. He was unassuming, warm, funny, and incredibly supportive of his children's endeavours. His pride and encouragement were unwavering. The family wishes to thank the incredible staff at Seven Oaks Hospital, Dr. John Moncek, Dr. Sheldon Koven, Cantor Jerry Daien, Grant Zipursky, the General Monash Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, pallbearers Neil Baker, Sheldon Kaminsky, Marshall Kneller, Ron Krug, Perry Litwack, Maurice Yacowar, and honourary pallbearers Morley Globerman, Harry Minuk, Dave Rosenbaum and Walter Turek. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sam's memory may be made to the Barbara Maslowsky Memorial Fund, in care of the Jewish Foundation of MB, the Seven Oaks Hospital, or the Gwen Sector Creative Living Centre. Daddy, we love you. We will take care of and respect each other as you have shown us. We will continue to make you proud and we will feel your support, warmth and spirit with us each and every day. Take care of Bobbi and be at peace.
